Edited by Cece Bell.

Starting at a new school is intimidating, especially with a bulky hearing aid strapped to her chest! At her old school, Cece felt at home among classmates who were all deaf, but now she’s aware of how different she is. She worries that her Phonic Ear, which helps her hear her teacher, will only draw stares and push potential friends away. But then Cece makes an exciting discovery: the Phonic Ear lets her hear her teacher not just in the classroom, but throughout the school—in the hallway, the teacher’s lounge, and even the bathroom! This newfound ability feels like a superpower, and Cece sets out to embrace her identity as El Deafo, Listener for All.
