Genie’s summer takes unexpected turns when he and his older brother, Ernie, leave Brooklyn for Virginia to spend time with their grandparents. The first surprise: their grandfather is blind, which leads Genie to marvel at how Grandpop manages everyday tasks with such skill. But when Genie discovers that Grandpop never leaves the house and finds a mysterious room full of birds and plants, he starts to question whether his grandfather is as brave as he first thought. Meanwhile, Ernie’s reluctance to learn to shoot a gun on his fourteenth birthday challenges Genie’s idea of what it means to be brave. Is bravery about proving something, or is it about knowing your limits?
